When it comes to productivity, it’s tempting to think there’s a one-size-fits-all solution—a magic system that, once discovered, will transform our days into perfectly balanced blocks of focus and freedom. But here’s the thing: productivity isn’t a cookie-cutter experience. It’s a journey of experimentation, self-discovery, and, yes, a little trial and error.


If you’ve ever tried a “perfect” system, only to throw in the towel when it didn’t work right away, you’re not alone. I’ve been there too. But the secret to true productivity isn’t about finding the system—it’s about creating your system.




Finding missing piece of the puzzle


The Myth of the Perfect Productivity Hack


Take my client, Sarah, for example. Sarah decided to wake up at 5 a.m. after hearing that’s what successful people do. She envisioned calm mornings filled with journaling, meditation, and a head start on her to-do list. But after a week of dragging herself out of bed and feeling cranky all day, she gave up, thinking, “I guess I’m just not a productive person.”


Sound familiar? The problem wasn’t Sarah. The problem was treating someone else’s strategy as the only way to be productive.


Why Experimentation Matters


Instead of giving up, imagine if Sarah had asked herself, What part of this worked, and what didn’t? Maybe the early wake-up didn’t suit her, but she loved how journaling helped her start the day with clarity. Instead of ditching the whole routine, she could shift journaling to a time that worked better—like during her lunch break.

This is the beauty of experimentation. Productivity isn’t about rigidly following someone else’s roadmap. It’s about trying, tweaking, and discovering what fits you.


How to Experiment with Productivity


Here’s how you can start making productivity work for your unique life:

  1. Start Small: Choose one strategy to try—a daily planner, time blocking, or prioritizing tasks with a “top three” list. Don’t overhaul your entire routine overnight.

  2. Test and Observe: Commit to trying your new strategy for a week or two. Pay attention to what feels natural and where you’re hitting roadblocks.

  3. Tweak and Customize: Ask yourself: What can I adjust to make this easier or more effective? For example, if time blocking feels overwhelming, start by blocking just your mornings instead of the whole day.

  4. Be Kind to Yourself: Remember, there’s no such thing as failure—only feedback. If something doesn’t work, it’s not because you’re bad at productivity. It’s just a sign that it needs adjustment.

  5. Mix and Match: Productivity is like a buffet. Take the pieces that work for you, leave what doesn’t, and create a system that feels like second nature.


The Power of Making It Your Own


One of my favorite examples comes from a friend who combined multiple strategies to create her perfect system. She loved the idea of time blocking but hated how rigid it felt. So, she paired it with a flexible priority list, giving herself the structure of a plan without the pressure to follow it to the letter.

That’s the magic of experimenting—you can take bits and pieces from different methods to design a system that supports your goals and works with your life, not against it.
